We have been creating our own tartan after noticing a Katie Morag’s tartan skirt in our new English story! We had to use our concentration and fine motor skills for weaving.

I loved your designs Larks!

This week, the Swifts have been learning all about different materials, solids, liquids and gases. They were amazed looking at images of microscopic image examples of particles and enjoyed learning how each material has different classifications such as, rigid, fixed shape, no fixed volume. We played a game of solids, liquids and gases, to practice creating different materials! We learnt from the game how tightly the particles must gather together to form a solid! We enjoyed reversing the changes to compare the differences.

We observed and explored lots of different materials and felt them with our hands to classify them as solids, liquids and gases. We couldn't believe hand cream was a special type of liquid and that flour and sand were actually a solid! We wondered, 'How can we observe a gas to classify it successfully?' We discovered fizzy pop had lots of tiny bubbles of gas called carbon dioxide inside. We could hear the gas being released from the bottle and placed a balloon over the top to see if the gas would rise to the top of the bottle. We were amazed to observe the balloon growing, catching the gas inside. We can't wait to investigate how to reverse the gas back into a liquid this term!
