Who’s that trip trapping over my bridge? Oh it’s the Wrens and Robins! What a trolltastic week we have had in EYFS! We have created Three Billy Goats Gruff story maps, role played with the small world billy goats and even built a bridge on a larger scale outside. On Wednesday we investigated materials and made bridges for the billy goats to cross the river. We found that a bridge has to be strong. Little Wrens went to look for bridges on their Nursery adventure. Dotty counted 5 bridges. You won’t believe that there was a Mrs T. Troll underneath one of them. The Little Wren’s trip trapped over the bridge and decided to give Mrs T. Troll some sausages so that they could pass to the green meadow. Phew, I’m glad the troll let you pass.

It has been a wonderful week in Larks, we have been counting in 2’s both in maths and in continuous provision as we are so good at it! We have continued our Chinese New Year celebrations by using chop sticks to pick up noodles for our fine motor skills. We did really want to eat them but they were cold! We painted Chinese temples, we wrote in Chinese and we created artwork of the Chinese New year fireworks. We made a boat for Captain Cook and Christopher Columbus to travel around the world, linked to our History learning. And in RE this week we have been learning all about Mass and how people gather after Mass to serve Jesus; we made biscuits to serve after Mass and had some role play.

Swifts began the week looking at what friction means and how it is linked to real life such as our foot wear and the vehicles we travel in. The Swifts’ had a scientific enquiry to answer whether different surface can impact the level of friction. We explored a range of materials and using our mathematic skills, we measured the distance our cars travelled. We found many variables from our investigations with the children developing their own enquiries as a result! The children concluded that rough and bumpy surfaces can have more friction than smooth, flat surfaces.

As part of Chinese New Year, the children embraced the year of the rabbit. We read as a class, Peter Rabbit as part of our literacy link. We then felt inspired by the Chinese celebrations to paint Peter Rabbit in China, how wonderful! We also explored foods from the Chinese culture and made sweet and sour sauce from scratch. We then enjoyed our sweet and sour sauce watching Peter Rabbit the movie. A very enjoyable day! The children loved the theme so much that they went down to Robins to read Peter Rabbit nursery rhymes to them and even asked the children questions about Chinese New Year! The Robins certainly impressed the Swifts with their knowledge of the zodiac years. A fantastic week!

This week we have finished our Solar System collages and, if I do say so myself, they are pretty awesome! We have also been exploring shadows in Science. In our Science groups, we designed investigations to find out how we can make shadows bigger and learned about the importance of only changing one variable.
