The Curriculum

” To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.” Chinese Proverb

Our Vision

We believe that learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education at St Mary’s will foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers. It should also provide opportunities for our pupils to communicate for practical purposes. Our languages teaching in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 will provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Our Aims

At ST Mary’s our languages curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity
  • have ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions by continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • are able to use their knowledge and skills to communicate in different languages for real purposes.
