Larks have been doing all things measurement this week! The children have loved learning about volume, capacity and temperature. They have been recording the temperature each day outside so we can look at patterns. The children have been using water to explain if something is full, half full or empty. The children also measured using millilitres in our water tray using coloured water. They used scales to check which is heavier an apple or a banana, we also measured using cubes so we could say the monkey had a mass of 15 cubes. We continued using our skills from last week to measure how tall our towers were and to see if they could build a tower taller than mine. I love that I see the children measuring their height against each other showing they are using their maths skills everyday.
This week has been a bugtastic week in EYFS. We have learnt about what an insect is and their habitats. on Wednesday we went for a bug hunt at the Bowes Museum and continued to develop our bug hunting skills at Forest School. All of the children have enjoyed the story of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, we even had Very Hungry Caterpillar snack this week.
The Swifts have had a busy week investigating the different rates of evaporation! They enquired whether environments can change the overall rates of how fast water evaporates and planned an investigation using wet socks! They used their variable skills to ensure all the socks were the same materials but they changed the environment! They used their knowledge of the water cycle to develop some very good predictions using the sun and heat as part of their reasoning. They were thrilled that their predictions were correct when the environment with the most sunlight dried the sock the fastest!
We also had some very talented rappers and musical writers this week in Swifts class! The children sang in role and unison this week to Fresh Prince of Bel Air and were enthusiastic about their performances! Reece has even printed the music off to practice on piano and has began writing the notes down for other children to read and play on other instruments. Thank you Reece and well done!
