World Book Day 2023
We had a wonderful day on Thursday celebrating World Book Day. This year th children were invited to dress as a character from one of their favourite books or to get creative and dress as an adjective of their choice. The children had fun guessing the adjective- we had lots of cosy, comfortable and even sleep children and staff!! I hope the children enjoy choosing a book with their £1 token. In the words of Julia Donaldson ‘Inspiring a child to read is one of the greatest gifts you can give’
Fee, fi, fo, fum!! What a giant beanstalk week we have had in Robins and Wrens. We have planted our own beans and learned about the bean life cycle. We have predicted that by the weekend our beans will have roots. Our Science investigations didn’t stop there as we have observed the growth of our class daffodils, watching and discussing the change each morning. Maisie told us that the daffodils need “water and sun to grow.” On Tuesday we made magic bean stew with Mrs T and it was delicious, we think the giant and Jack would find it very tasty. On Wednesday we made our own collage beanstalk, using our fine motor skills to sew the leaves. Wrens then used their knowledge of the story to make sequencing chains and Robin’s rewrote the story. What a super busy week. I hear a Tiger may be coming for tea on Monday…
First week back has been amazing. We have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. We have made 2D shapes outside using sticks. We have searched our classroom for 3D shapes but we could not find any cones! In class we celebrated World Book Day all week and had a different activity linked to stories each day. We coloured elephants like Elmer, we made porridge like in Goldilocks and the three bears, we made dragons and helped animals like in Zog and we made gingerbread men like in The Ninjabread Man. We continued reading Grandad’s Island as part of our Literacy and this week wrote some amazing expanded noun phrases to describe where they were. Thursday we celebrated World Book Day and wow… how amazing everyone looked! We made bookmarks to use in reading, painted our favourite story characters and even designed our own book cover. In art this week we painted African inspired prints, we used objects from the classroom and did rubbings, print and stamping patterns. Well done Larks!
This week Swifts have been measuring, and finding perimeters using cm and m. They have enjoyed taking their learning outside using metre sticks and trundle wheels to estimate and then measure perimeters of the field and yard. There was some very close to accurate estimates and some impressive converting measures too this week. Well done Swifts.
The Owls have been very busy this week.
In Religious Education we have been learning how actions, festivals and symbols remind us of special times in Jesus’ life. During the Last Supper, Jesus broke the bread and told his disciples that the bread represented his body and that they should break bread to remember him. We made the link to Mass, when Father Thomas breaks the bread and shares it with the congregation. We shared some of our own special memories with each other and talked about special places we visit and object we treasure.
We are continuing to learn about Space and have been interested to learn how astronauts train for their first expedition into Space. Our Moon Buggies are now motorised and we are looking forward to testing them out on the surface of ‘the Moon’ next week.
On Wednesday, we completed the first of our Lent Walks to raise money for Toilet Twinning. We will be walking every Wednesday so if you are free why not join us on our adventures.
